Tennis Club pay lasting tribute to long serving chairman
Over the Bank Holiday week-end, Alkrington Tennis club held its annual opening lunch, a traditional fixture in the club’s social calendar to mark the start of the tennis season.
This year the club wanted to use the event to pay tribute to chairman Brian Sandford who sadly passed away earlier this year.
Brian also ran the bridge club at Alkrington, a game he played in the school staff room during his career as an English teacher. After retirement Brian set up weekly bridge afternoons and evenings at the club and they are extremely popular with members.
Above all though, Brian will be remembered for his tireless work for Alkrington Tennis club. He was a member for over 50 years and served 13 of those years as chairman.
The club committee decided to dedicate a memorial bench to Brian where the members could sit and watch a game he loved playing.
Acting chairman Arthur Armstrong, a doubles partner of Brian’s, officially unveiled the memorial bench in the presence of Brian’s wife Barbara, his children and grandchildren.
Paying his own tribute, Arthur said ‘We have to now move on as a club. Brian left us a brilliant legacy; First class courts and a strong membership. Together with coach Karen Bevan the junior membership is increasing and the club has a great future’.
